Randy "Ski" Thompson:
The Ski Mask Way
by Seth "Soul Man" Ferranti
Randy "Ski" Thompson is a new underground author making major noise in the urban literary world. His novel The Ski Mask Way is loosely based on his own personal journey in the streets. The vividness make it obvious that he's really been there. Randy found his talent for writing while he was incarcerated. His book is fast paced, humorous and thought provoking. Ski Mask Way tells the story of a young man that plans to get his family out of the hood with his basketball skills, but when things don't turn out the way he planned he trades in his hoop dreams for street dreams. With a group of childhood friends he goes on a robbing spree across the state of New York. Ski Mask Way is a roller coaster ride without the brakes, jammed packed with twists and turns from beginning to end.
What made you decide to write a book?
Me and my peoples use to always say our life was like a movie coming up, but I actually wrote my first book on a dare. One day while I was incarcerated at Ft. Dix I made a comment to two of my co-defendants that I could write a book. So I first started writing to show them I could do it, and eventually I fell in love with it.
Who published your book?
My book is published by Flowers In Bloom Publishing which is owned and operated by Nancey Flowers and home to Essence Best Selling Author J.M. Benjamin. The company is new to the street lit genre but with me and J.M. on the same roster it's like having Mike and a young Kobe on the same team.
What is your book about?
My book is about a young man who is doing everything in his power to reach his dream of becoming a professional basketball player. He has a 3.0 grade average, and his only connection to the street is his comrades that he grew up with. Eventually he goes to college on a basketball scholarship and after tragedy strikes, he trades his hoop dreams in for street dreams. It's starts off as something temporary, but it ends up being a career. He starts off selling drugs and eventually he and his childhood friends form up a robbing crew and start pulling heists. The book is more than a book about robberies, it's about a young man dealing with his morality during his journey in the streets. He starts off a innocent kid, but turns into a ruthless, heartless young man. Everything you could want in a book The Ski Mask Way has. It will make you laugh, cry and cheer. By the end of the book you'll feel like you grew up with Ski.
Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Randy "Ski" Thompson. I from Baldwin, Long Island. I was just released from Federal Prison after doing a 7 year sentence for robbery, and I'm hungry and ready to take on the street lit genre the same way I did the streets. The Ski Mask Way.
Do you draw stuff from real life when you write?
My books are 100% authentic. The Ski Mask way is based on my life story and every character is based on a real person, and every situation is based on my real life experiences. But I only write about what I've seen and done. If a character in one of my books is in F.C.I. Allenwood, someone who is reading it in Allenwood can read it and know that I've really been there. There's a lot of computer gangsta's out there that write about the street but have never been in the street. What I think gives me an advantage of other authors is not only have I been in the streets but I can also write.
What writers and books do you like?
My all time favorite book is Roots by Alex Haley. But as far as street lit goes I only rock with a select few. I like J.M. Benjamin, T. Styles, Kwan, Al-Saadiq Banks, Wahida Clark, and I still love Teri Woods books.
What do you think of street lit?
I think street lit is very similar to Hip-Hop. It gives us a voice and gives people from the hood something they can read that they can identify with. It also gives White America a chance to see what we are actually going through in the hood. A lot of dudes that could possibly be on your corner hustling or running up in your house are feeding their families with street lit. And, that is a beautiful thing. I think the industry is getting oversaturated with a lot of garbage but that's to be expected. Personally I don't believe to many authors can see me with the pen at all.
What do you have coming up?
My second novel, the Ski Mask Way II: The Saga Continues will be released and my third novel is titled Gang Green. At this very moment I'm working on three separate projects so you'll definitely be hearing a lot from me in the future.
